Keeping NY City Streets Green

What's New

Partnering with Greening Morrisania and buildON, BrooklynShade kicked off the year with an early Tree Guard Building Clinic in January. Despite the cold weather, the students worked tirelessly throughout the day and we completed our first 2010 tree guard in the Bronx.

"Asthma rates are among the highest in the country in Morrisania, so we are especially happy to be working where residents can receive the most benefit from street tree protection." points out BrooklynShade education manager, Tony Bellis. "With additional resources, we hope to spent more time working with communities in the South Bronx."

The day started with a short discussion on the benefits of street trees, followed by fabrication and construction of the guard. Using just hand saws and an electric drills, the guard was built in just over 2 hours. Every student got the opportunity to help assemble the guard and later went home with instructions on how to build guards for the trees on their own block.

"I just want to thank BrooklynShade very much for providing our students with such an amazing service project this past Saturday along with Greening Morrisania." states Charlene Clarke from buildOn. "When planning service projects for my students, I always try to make sure there is service learning involved and the students understand why they are participating for the day, and BrooklynShade executed that so well and kept our buildOn students highly engaged."
